NO JOY’s catalogue is now available on Hand Drawn Dracula Records Canada!!!! With a penchant for delay-saturated jangle, industrial distortion, and sludgey drones over disco beats with leveled-up expertise in production, NO JOY has showcased and evolved their sound through these pivotal Canadian releases.

Following their acclaimed 2010 debut, Ghost Blonde, No Joy released the five-song EP Negaverse, a mini album that highlighted “both the intimacy and intricacy of their song-craft.” “With their strong second full-length Wait to Pleasure, No Joy transcended the faithful shoegaze revivalism of their 2010 debut by yanking melodies out of their thick, fuzzy guitar stew and operating with previously unforeseen refinement and clarity” (Pitchfork). That same year they released the “fleeting yet revelatory” (Exclaim) Pastel & Pass Out EP to coincide with their 2013 European tour. On 2015’s More Faithful, No Joy “pulled off one hell of a trick: by the time it’s over, you’re wondering how a record so precise, so considered, can sound so gloriously laid-back” (The Line Of Best Fit).

FAKE PALMS, the project of Toronto-based musician, Michael le Riche is today sharing the new single “Flags” and video (directed by Justis Krar) as the final advance preview of his new record, Lemons which is set for release via Hand Drawn Dracula on Friday, September 16.

Flags” arrives as the final preview of the new record which, as a full piece, circles around outsider-pop, post-punk and the sound of early/mid-naughts British indie-rock. Swirling guitars bounce off of each other circling around fervent percussion before shifting into something harder-hitting across the chorus. Speaking about the single, Michael says: “‘Flags’ is a song about having to find where you fit within the machinery. Is it comfortable? Is it against what your beliefs are? Do you want to do it or do you have to do it? Do you feel like a traitor? Or are you scared at how much you actually enjoy it? We all seem to have these specters we answer to, these things we rally for or against subconsciously. This is kind of about what happens when you are forced to stare your decisions in the face.”

The new record evolves from the 00’s angular guitar rhythms that defined the post-punk foundations of Fake Palms’ first two releases. Lemons switches out some of the irregular time-signatures of 70’s college rock and first-take recording approach, this time moving with confidence into more dissonant yet accessible directions of brighter melodic structures.

Michael le Riche called upon a veritable who’s who of Toronto indie-dom for Lemons, drawing from the ranks of Dilly Dally (Ben Reinhartz), Ducks Ltd (Evan Lewis), Sauna (Braeden Craig), and Twist (Laura Hermiston). Taking to Candle Recording studio with long-time contributor, co-producer, and engineer Josh Korody (Breeze, Beliefs), the songwriting dove headlong even further into dream-math-punk sensibilities.

The hooks are sharp, the rhythms choppy, the vocals achingly cool. If you’ve ever found yourself enjoying The Modern Lovers, The Strokes, Parquet Courts, Cage the Elephant or any number of similar rhythm groups, then you’ll find something here to devour” – THE LINE OF BEST FIT

BONNIE TRASH is the drone-rock project of Canadian-Italian twin sisters Emmalia and Sarafina Bortolon-Vettor. Today they share new single “Perfect Moment (A Beautiful Reunion)” from their debut album, ‘Malocchio’, to be released on October 28th via Hand Drawn Dracula.

‘Malocchio’ unspools a real-life horror story based on the stories told to them by their Italian grandmother. Over heavy, hypnotic riffs, pounding drums and spooky soundscapes, the lyrics pull the listener into the meaning of the “evil eye,” a hex of malice onto another.

Speaking on today’s new single, with accompanying video shot and directed by Sam Maloney, the band comment: “How do you see yourself dying? How do others see you dying? How does it feel to be left to die, when there’s nothing else you can do, waiting for that ‘perfect’ moment of one last euphoria: a beautiful reunion. This song is a genuflection to all of the nonni who passed during the pandemic and could not be held.”

FAKE PALMS, the project helmed by Toronto-based artist Michael le Riche, is today returning with his third single “Civil Liberties” (video directed by Jordan Allen) from Lemons, set for release via Hand Drawn Dracula on September 16, 2022.

The haunting “Civil Liberties” comes as another refreshing reminder of le Riche’s smart ability to meld outsider-pop with post-punk, coating his sound in this metallic, slick sheen. It summons the sounds of The Strokes circa Room On Fire, Iceage and Omni with a pummelling rhythm track tied to a tingly, soaring chorus that’s impossible to shake after first exposure. “Civil Liberties” manages the trick of sounding wistful and dystopian at the same time. “This record is the most direct thing I’ve ever done,” says Le Riche. “All the distorted guitars playing 16th-note riffs in different time signatures, washes of noise and buried vocals are basically gone. In their place we made a record that’s lean and a punch to the gut.”

“I am a firm believer in “what goes down must come up,” people usually say the opposite, but this is a motto I’ve used throughout my life. When things aren’t going well, they have a tendency to bounce back. ‘Memento’, to me, is my pick-up song. When I sing “gotta get you on your way now”, I’m saying that it’s time to move on and move forward. I’ve had many moments in my life where I’ve lost momentum and felt directionless like I’d fallen into a black hole. It’s hard to crawl out of the hole and get back on track. I think there are a lot of people who spend their time thinking about how they need to get back on track. Listen to this song and remind yourself it’s time to look forward and lean into the future.” – Saraha Cogan (Tallies)

The balance of optimism and something more world-weary and wise is symptomatic of Tallies’ music, this new single “Memento” lays into those ideas once more while drawing on gliding, shoegaze-adjacent jangle-pop reminiscent of The Sundays, Galaxie 500, Ride, etc. While many of their songs are upbeat, with Frankland’s breezy guitar lines drenched in reverb, soaring over Cian O’Neill’s propulsive drumbeats, Sarah’s lyrics pull out deep thought and emotive responses to day-to-day struggles.

a well-crafted set of jangly dream-pop with shimmering guitars, buoyant rhythms, ethereal vocals and wistful melodies” – KEXP

Coming produced by Graham Walsh (of Holy Fuck, previously helmed records by METZ and Alvvays) alongside Dylan Frankland of the band at Palace Sound, Baskitball 4 Life and Candle Recording in Toronto, Patina arrives as a true labor of love; one that was delayed due to the pandemic but ultimately marks a truly rewarding collection for the band. Upon sharing the music with labels, it pricked the ears of Cocteau Twins’ Simon Raymonde – a hero of the band – who signed Tallies to his Bella Union label, providing “a light at the end of a dark tunnel” according to Sarah Cogan of the band.

BONNIE TRASH is the drone-rock project of Canadian-Italian twin sisters Emmalia and Sarafina Bortolon-Vettor. Today they have announced details of their debut album, ‘Malocchio’, to be released on October 28th via Hand Drawn Dracula, and have shared new single Have You Seen Her

Speaking on today’s new single – the shadowy and foreboding Have You Seen Her– the band comment: “The music video plays out like a sci-fi involving an alternate dimension/timeline. Using the same idea of the malocchio that haunted our nonna decades ago, what does it look like when conjured by generations later in the future, and can this generational haunting finish once and for all? We see two siblings confront the malocchio head-on, only for it to follow once more. The curse has become a part of them. Do not be afraid.

Have You Seen Her is also about the tragic loss of a loved one, longing to be with them, and wondering where they’ve ended up – above the clouds? Below the earth? A new (to us) dimension? Death is the only thing we know to be true in this world. Precious memories here are what we hold onto. When our loves are taken from us by what may be a curse, it’s only natural that we want to find a way to reverse it, and reunite with them in harmony.”

July 15th GUV III & IV : Today marks the release of the full double album GUV III & IV by YOUNG GUV. To celebrate the release, we’re sharing a music video for “CRY 2 SLEEP” (Directed By Guv & Luis Hernandez). The double album, which features both GUV III and GUV IV albums with new artwork by Braulio Aamado and a new bonus track “SHE SPARKLES EVERYWHERE ft. Bobbie Lovesong”.

June 24th GUV IV : Dive deeper into the world of  YOUNG GUV is gearing up to release his new album GUV IV, his second full-length album this year. Written entirely in the Sangre de Cristo mountain range of New Mexico following a cancelled tour in the spring of 2020, the songs on GUV IV range in the way that only a Young Guv record can – from Laurel Canyon jangle to British Invasion blues-pop to AM-radio Americana to the mildly sleazy electro pop on a song-by-song basis. But at its core, GUV IV is a collection of songs dedicated and testifying to the eternal healing power of love. Released June 24th via Run For Cover and Hand Drawn Dracula Records.

FAKE PALMS, the project helmed by Toronto-based artist Michael le Riche, is today returning with his new single “Visions” (video directed by Justis Krar) from Lemons, set for release via Hand Drawn Dracula on September 16, 2022.

The arch jangle of new single, “Visions” evokes Lee Ranaldo linking up with the bubblegum-savvy early Wire while finding le Riche tapping into some of his poppiest moments as a songwriter following his previous work as Fake Palms, as well as the soupy electronica of his work with Sauna and art-rock of Darcys. The track erupts with slashing guitar and quickfire percussion which matches Michael’s vocals toe for toe. Speaking about the track, he says: “Visions” is the sound of power chords and an overactive right arm. No more intricate, overly complex guitar parts or different time signatures. It’s Buzzcocks or the Dead Boys at its core, angular and jangly. “Musically, it’s the most direct thing I’ve ever done. No hiding behind walls of reverb, mutating time signatures, or vague lyrics.”

Toronto-born, London-based artist TESS PARKS releases a new video for ‘I See Angels’, lifted from her newly-released solo album, ‘And Those Who Were Seen Dancing’, out now on Fuzz Club and Hand Drawn Dracula Records. Alongside the new album, Parks has also announced UK/EU tour and festival dates in support. Following years of international touring and a lengthy list of critically-acclaimed collaborations with Brian Jonestown Massacre‘s Anton Newcombe in recent years (most recently the duo’s self-titled 2018 LP), the new album will be Parks’ first full-length solo offering since her much-loved debut album, ‘Blood Hot‘, was released back in 2013. Trailing the highly-praised singles ‘Happy Birthday Forever‘, ‘Brexit at Tiffany’s‘ and ‘Do You Pray?‘, ‘And Those Who Were Seen Dancing‘ is out now.

On ‘I See Angels’, Parks says: “This song was written on my way out of New York and for the video I always had this vision of dancers dancing all over the city, I always love seeing people who have the confidence, discipline and motivation to decide that they’re going to go to some particular spot and just dance there for the day. I came across Joe Bressler’s work and loved it and he lived in New York so we decided to collaborate. We loosely discussed locations, but without knowing, he ended up choosing some places that had great personal sentimental significance to me. I love how the video ends with this beautiful ballerina finally out free and dancing in nature. That whole last dance sequence is framed like an actual renaissance painting.”

PRAISES, the project helmed by Toronto-based artist Jesse Crowe, has today released its sophomore record In This Year: Hierophant via Hand Drawn Dracula. Alongside sharing the new record, Praises has also released the single “Our Father” with a video directed by Julia Wittmann. Praises will also be performing an album release show in Toronto at The Horseshoe Tavern on August 11th with Roach and Bonnie Trash.

Through instinct, talent, and of course, blind luck, Praises – who now operate as a full band – harnessed their sound through the course of the pandemic, leaning into the creative spirit and a recording process reminiscent of a Bad Seeds project where key players wrote their parts from only a demo track and a feeling. The result pushes beyond their industrial synth-based offerings, incorporating the intensity of their highly regarded live performances with an intimate, collaborative, and distanced songwriting process.

Speaking about the new single, “Our Father”, which is built on brooding synth and solemn percussion before building into a climax, Crowe explains: “In the years following the Me Too movement, it can feel as though every safe feeling male mentor will be exposed as an abuser. Our Father is a letter to Nick Cave, and is meant to playfully invoke his tone as a means to warn him against ever being a pig.”
