YOUNG GUV, aka songwriter Ben Cook (vocalist of No Warning and former guitarist of Fucked Up), recently announced his new double album, GUV III & GUV IV, with the first installment, GUV III, due out March 11th from Run For Cover and Hand Drawn Dracula Records. Today he’s shared the album’s latest single “Good Time.”

From start to finish, GUV III is full of undeniable hooks and crunchy guitars, offering the perfect entry point for both new listeners and those already initiated into the wide world of Guv. As evidenced by “Good Time” and previous singles “Only Wanna See U Tonight,” “Lo Lo Lonely,” and “It’s Only Dancin'” (which have garnered attention from the likes of Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, Uproxx, Raven Sings The Blues, and more), Cook has a distinct ability to channel years of crate-digging into Young Guv’s songs, resulting in a record that brings a fresh perspective to timeless sounds.

Toronto-born, London-based singer-songwriter TESS PARKS is today announcing her long-awaited new album ‘And Those Who Were Seen Dancing’ and sharing the first single, ‘Happy Birthday Forever’. Following years of international touring and a lengthy list of collaborations with Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe in recent years (most recently the duo’s self-titled 2018 LP), the new album will be released May 20th by Fuzz Club Records and Hand Drawn Dracula in Canada and will be Parks’ first full-length solo offering since her much-loved debut album, ‘Blood Hot’, was released back in 2013. The uplifting, almost gospel-infused psych pop of ‘Happy Birthday Forever’ is out now.

“In my mind, this album is like hopscotch”, Parks says of ‘And Those Who Were Seen Dancing’: “These songs were pieced together over time in London, Toronto and Los Angeles with friends and family between August 2019 and March 2021. So many other versions of these songs exist. The recording and final completion of this album took over two years and wow – the lesson I have learned the most is that words are spells. If I didn’t know it before, I know it now for sure. I only want to put good out into the universe.”

A creeping disillusionment with the state of the world paired with an injury that stopped Parks from being able to play guitar and piano for months meant the album was nearly shelved. “I really felt discouraged to complete this album”, she recalls: “I stopped listening to music for honestly about a year altogether and turned to painting instead. I really had to convince myself again that it’s important to just share whatever good we can – having faith in ourselves to know that our lights can shine on and on through other people and for other people. The thought of anyone not sharing their art or being shy of anything they create seems like a real tragedy to me. Even if it’s not perfect, you’re capturing a moment.”

Recorded over two years between 2019 and 2021 but with songs, lyrics and ideas dating back over a decade in some form, ‘And Those Who Were Seen Dancing’ is an album full of such moments, people and places. Out now with an accompanying video made from home-recordings of Parks at ballet classes as a child, ‘Happy Birthday Forever’ is a perfect case in point. Parks says of the track:

“These lyrics were written when I was living on Henshaw Street in Elephant and Castle in 2009. I think I used to play this at some of my first solo shows in London. In late August 2019, I brought the words to Ruari [Meehan]’s, and him and Francesco [Perini] had already made this amazing music so I sang over it and then later, Josh [Korody] added the awesome beat that comes in. The song was very cleverly and surprisingly originally titled ‘Get Me Out Of Here’, and one day in October 2020 my sister, Isabella, was driving us home from a mixing session and I saw a license plate that said ‘GMOOH’, which is how I always used to abbreviate it, so I was like, ‘Okay, I’m definitely on the right path, I must be. Gotta finish this album’.”

Today he’s shared the album’s latest single “It’s Only Dancin’.”

Like the album’s previous singles “Only Wanna See U Tonight” and “Lo Lo Lonely” (which garnered attention from the likes of Stereogum, BrooklynVegan, Uproxx, Raven Sings The Blues, and more) “It’s Only Dancin'” harnesses Cook’s deep well of influences and channels them into Young Guv’s untouchably catchy power pop machine. The song’s glistening guitars and quick tempo sound like Tom Petty on a Paul Collins kick, delivering a jolt of melody that feels timeless and distinctly Guv all at once.

With new music in the works, TESS PARKS is today announcing her signing to Hand Drawn Dracula and UK indie label Fuzz Club. She says of the news: “I am very happy to say I will be releasing new music soon with longtime friends Fuzz Club and Hand Drawn Dracula. I have been collaborators with both labels for many years so joining their respective families couldn’t be a more natural fit. I am forever grateful to be able to make music and share music with my friends.

Set to arrive in 2022, Tess Parks has been busy readying her first solo album since her much-adored debut ‘Blood Hot‘ was released on Alan McGee‘s 359 Records label in 2013 (the Creation Records founder being an early champion of Parks.) ‘Blood Hot’ introduced Parks’ mesmerizing sound to the world to near-instant acclaim. Soon enough she had picked up a dedicated cult-like following, was touring internationally to sold-out venues and sharing stages with heroes like The Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs and The Dandy Warhols.

In the years since ‘Blood Hot‘, Parks went on to release a number of critically acclaimed collaborative albums and EPs with Brian Jonestown Massacre’s Anton Newcombe (including 2015’s ‘I Declare Nothing‘ LP, and the ‘Right On‘ EP and ‘Tess Parks & Anton Newcombe‘ LP which were both released in 2018.) Tess has also written and performed on a number of Brian Jonestown Massacre albums, including ‘Pish‘, ‘Third World Pyramid‘ and ‘Dropping Bombs On The Sun‘, as well as singing on the revisited BJM classic ‘Fingertips‘.

“No Dreams of Fayres” marks a step up in what 2019’s Tallies promised, once again drawing on the ethereal dream-pop aesthetics of Lush, Beach House and Cocteau Twins but this time turning the dial on some of those shimmering guitar lines. Produced by Graham Walsh (Holy Fuck) and Dylan Frankland of the band at Palace Sound, Baskitball 4 Life and Candle Recording in Toronto, “No Dreams of Fayres” documents singer, Sarah Cogan’s battle with depression; the moments when she was trying to work it out but couldn’t find the energy to do so.

Speaking about the new single, Cogan of the band says: “‘No Dreams of Fayres’ is a reflection of thoughts that I remember going through my mind when I stayed still in bed. Feeling as though staying still in bed was the only thing that would help the sadness – basically, disconnecting myself from family, friends, and having a life. Finding the way out of depression was hard but possible. ‘No Dreams of Fayres’ is also about the realization of letting yourself feel real feelings but not mistaking them for emotions. I had to learn to get a grip of what I wanted out of life and go for it with no self-sabotage – which was music, as cliché as it sounds. It pulled me out of bed, physically and mentally.”

After releasing a string of solo singles and mixes, PRINCE JOSH has cultivated an exciting sound combining elements of house, downtempo and global club sounds. His latest single (co-released on Paris’ Kitsune imprint), One Time ft. Orit, mixes electronic elements with Orit’s vocals as an introspective reflexion on relationships.

“Prince Josh’s first single since making his full-length solo debut with The Joy last year. The was named one of Exclaim!’s 25 Canadian Albums You Might Have Missed in 2020″ – EXCLAIM

“One Time’ originally started out as a trip-hop beat sent to me by Montreal based producer CFCF back in 2017. The track sat on my laptop until I rediscovered it this year and decided to sample a small loop towards the end. Once the track started to take shape, I immediately sent it to Toronto based singer Orit, who I’d been talking to over quarantine about working together. After our first session the song quickly started to take shape, and by the last session we knew we’d made something special: a song for before, during and after a night out.” – Prince Josh

“The lyrics were inspired by a turbulent relationship. Oftentimes when the dust of a failed relationship settles we try to outweigh the good with the bad. This song expresses a rejection of the good, ultimately deciding that the entire experience is worth erasing.” – Orit

YOUNG GUV, aka songwriter Ben Cook (ex-Fucked Up, No Warning), has returned with the announcement of his new double album GUV III & IV. The first installment, GUV III, is due out March 11th from Run For Cover Records (ROW) and Hand Drawn Dracula (Canada) and it’s an absolute power pop masterpiece. Packed from front to back with undeniable hooks and crunchy guitars, the record offers Cook’s most instantly gratifying songs yet.

Young Guv has kicked off release with a bang, sharing the album’s massive first single “Lo Lo Lonely.” With its overdriven chords, stomping beat, and anthemic chorus, “Lo Lo Lonely” is the kind of swaggering guitar pop anthem that would make a Gallagher brother proud.

Young Guv has a lengthy run of shows lined up in support of GUV III, starting with a US tour with Narrow Head in November, and then heading to Europe and the UK early next year.
